Murphy Urges Year-Round Local Shopping in ‘Christmas in July’ Reminder

MURPHY, N.C. — The City of Murphy is using a “Christmas in July” theme to remind residents and visitors that supporting local businesses benefits the community year-round, not just during the holiday season.

Officials say every dollar spent at local retailers and restaurants — particularly when paid in cash — circulates within the local economy, helping sustain jobs and services in the North Carolina mountain town. The message encourages shoppers to make downtown Murphy their first stop instead of defaulting to big-box stores.

“Christmas in July reminder,” the city’s post states. “There are always campaigns in November and December to #shoplocal and reminders that every dollar you spend in a local retailer or restaurant... stays in your local community’s economy! This is true ALL YEAR long, not just during the holidays.”

The city highlighted several downtown options for everyday needs:

  • Heifer & Bull Butchery for fresh cuts at the butcher shop.

  • Murphy Farmers Market on Saturdays for fresh vegetables.

  • The Flower Hound Farm & Venue for ordering flowers for loved ones.

  • FairyCross Bottle Shop for a wide selection of wines to pair with dinner.

  • House of Esther for natural skincare routines free of harsh chemicals.

“Try out a new shop,” the city urged. “Your everyday purchases don’t have to come from a box store! Come to Downtown Murphy for your purchases FIRST. You’ll be happy you did!”

A full directory of downtown Murphy businesses is available on the city’s website at townofmurphync.com.

Murphy, located in Cherokee County near the Georgia border, is known for its small-town charm and Appalachian setting. Local leaders regularly promote downtown shopping and events to bolster the area’s economy.
