Blairsville, GA – Sheriff Shawn Dyer has announced the inaugural Union County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy, a new program designed to give local residents an inside look at law enforcement operations and the vital services provided by the Sheriff’s Office.
The academy is open to any Union County resident who is 18 years of age or older and interested in learning more about modern policing. The program will consist of five Thursday evening sessions held on August 6, 13, 20, and 27, and September 3, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:15 PM. Participants are required to commit to attending all five sessions.
“The purpose of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of deputies in modern law enforcement,” Sheriff Dyer stated.
The program aims to educate citizens on a wide range of law enforcement topics, including daily operations, investigations, tactics, and crime scene management. While the sessions will not cover every area in exhaustive detail, participants will receive a comprehensive introduction to the important work performed by the Sheriff’s Office. Each segment will be led by active personnel assigned to that specific division, giving attendees the opportunity to meet and learn directly from the men and women who serve the community.
How to Apply
Citizens Academy applications and background check forms are available at the front desk of the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Completed forms must be returned no later than June 25, 2026.

This new initiative reflects the Sheriff’s Office commitment to transparency, community engagement, and building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the citizens they serve. Residents interested in gaining a better understanding of local policing are encouraged to apply.
