Young Harris College Volleyball Team Lends a Hand in Preserving Towns County History

Hiawassee, GA – Members of the Young Harris College girls' volleyball team rolled up their sleeves recently to assist the Towns County Historical Society with a significant project: relocating historical archives from temporary storage in the Old Rock Jail to a dedicated archive room.

In a Facebook post, the Towns County Historical Society expressed deep gratitude to the student-athletes for their volunteer effort. “A special thank you and shoutout to the Young Harris College girls volleyball team for helping us move our archives from storage in the Old Rock Jail to their new home in the archive room behind the ORJ!” the post read.

The move marks an important milestone for the Historical Society as it works toward reopening the Old Rock Jail to the public. Organizers say the relocation will allow for better organization of the archives and improved public access, making Towns County’s rich history more accessible to residents and visitors alike.

“We are grateful for their hard work and willingness to lend a hand as we continue preserving and sharing Towns County’s history,” the society added.

The Old Rock Jail, a historic structure in Hiawassee, has long served as a focal point for local heritage efforts. With the archives now properly housed in the new room, the Historical Society can focus on its broader goal of fully reopening the site as a community resource for learning about the area’s past.
