Andrews, Hiwassee Dam advance as Mountain Buzz teams close out playoff weekend

Mountain Buzz area high school basketball teams wrapped up postseason play over the weekend, with several North Carolina squads advancing and the final Georgia team seeing its season come to an end.

In the NC 2A state tournament, the postseason run ended Saturday, Feb. 28, for both Murphy teams. The Murphy Lady Bulldogs were eliminated with a 59-16 loss to Bishop McGuinness, while the Murphy Bulldogs fell 62-53 to Elkin in boys’ action.

There was better news in the NC 1A tournament, where multiple Mountain Buzz area teams advanced. The Andrews Wildcats picked up a 59-47 win over Winston-Salem Prep to move on. On the girls’ side, the Andrews Lady Wildcats edged The College Prep & Leadership Academy 45-41 to secure a spot in the next round. The Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles also advanced, defeating Highlands 56-41.

Across the state line in Georgia, the final Mountain Buzz area team saw its season conclude Friday, Feb. 27. The Union County Lady Panthers were eliminated with a 46-33 loss to Thomson, closing out postseason play for local Georgia programs.

With the weekend results, Andrews and Hiwassee Dam remain alive in the NC 1A brackets, while other Mountain Buzz area teams turn their attention to the offseason after hard-fought playoff runs.
