HAYESVILLE, N.C. — In a battle of Smoky Mountain Conference titans, the No. 8 Cherokee Lady Braves outlasted the No. 9 Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets in a gripping four-set volleyball match on Thursday, Sept. 25, reinforcing their dominance in the conference.


Cherokee, the only SMC team to defeat Hayesville this season, maintained their undefeated conference record with a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 26-24). The match showcased the talent and tenacity of both squads, setting the stage for a potential rematch in the upcoming conference tournament.


Hayesville struck first, claiming the opening set 25-21 with sharp serves and relentless defense. The Lady Yellow Jackets faced a daunting 20-10 deficit in the second set but mounted a fierce comeback, only to fall 25-23. Cherokee seized control in the third set, cruising to a 25-14 win. The fourth set was a nail-biter, with Hayesville fighting to extend the match, but Cherokee sealed the victory 26-24.


Both teams demonstrated why they are the SMC’s elite, with powerful attacks and resilient defense keeping fans on edge. Cherokee’s balanced offense and clutch plays proved decisive, while Hayesville’s grit kept them competitive until the final point.


Hayesville (ranked 9th in North Carolina) now shifts focus to a two-day tournament at North Henderson starting Friday, Sept. 26, aiming to build momentum for their march to the postseason.
