Close Finishes and Big Wins Highlight Tuesday’s High School Basketball Action


Several local high school basketball teams were in action Tuesday night, with close finishes and decisive victories highlighting conference and non-conference play.


In Bryson City, the Swain County girls varsity team dropped a home conference matchup to Andrews, falling 67-53. Andrews controlled the game throughout to secure the road win, while Swain County was unable to close the gap late.


Robbinsville experienced mixed results at home against Hayesville. The Lady Jackets fought hard for a narrow 54-53 conference win after trailing 16-10 at the end of the first quarter. Hayesville chipped away over the final three periods, outscoring Robbinsville 13-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the one-point victory. In the boys contest, Robbinsville earned a convincing 72-48 win. The Black Knights built an early advantage with a 22-14 first quarter and steadily extended the lead in each period.


At Hiwassee Dam, the Eagles girls team cruised to a 68-38 conference win over Murphy. Hiwassee Dam’s offense proved too much as it pulled away for the 30-point victory. The boys teams followed with a non-conference matchup, where Murphy claimed a 67-29 win over Hiwassee Dam.


In Blairsville, the Union County girls team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Sonoraville 47-41 in a home regional game. Union County entered the final period trailing but closed strong with an 18-10 fourth quarter. The boys contest was even tighter, as Union County edged Sonoraville 67-66 to complete the home sweep.


In Greensboro, GA, the Greene County boys team earned a 72-69 home conference victory over Towns County. The three-point win capped a competitive matchup that stayed close through the final minutes.


On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Murphy hosts Highlands and Andrews welcomes Blue Ridge Early College.
