Gentry, North Carolina's Winningest High School Football Coach, Inducted Into NFHS National Hall of Fame

MURPHY, N.C. (AP) — David Gentry, the winningest high school football coach in North Carolina history and a legendary figure at Murphy High School, has been inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations National High School Hall of Fame.

Gentry was among 12 honorees in the 2026 class inducted Monday during the NFHS Summer Meeting in Salt Lake City.

The retired coach compiled a career record of 426-195-3 over 47 seasons, including 370 wins at Murphy. His victory total ranks as the highest in North Carolina high school football history and among the top 15 nationally.

Gentry coached at Chatham and Edneyville high schools before taking over the Murphy program in 1983. He transformed the Bulldogs into a powerhouse, leading them to nine N.C. High School Athletic Association state championships in Class 1A: 1986, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2021. His teams also won 18 conference titles and posted an 82-25 record in the postseason.

“During his educational journey and career, David has touched many lives, especially in western North Carolina,” NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker said. “While honing his skills as a coach in the athletic arena, he was also a dedicated teacher and role model for his players and students. David Gentry is a jewel!”

Gentry, an Elon University graduate who played football for the Phoenix, previously has been inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (2025), NCHSAA Hall of Fame (2023), Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (2017) and National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2019).

The NFHS National High School Hall of Fame, established in 1982, now includes 552 individuals recognized for extraordinary achievements in high school sports and performing arts.

Gentry is the only North Carolinian in the 2026 class. Other coaches inducted include Jan Barker of Texas (volleyball) and Flo Valdez of New Mexico/Texas (multi-sport).
