The Hayesville boys cross country team is headed to the state championship, and freshman Makenna Moss is going with them.
Hayesville's boys finished fourth in the team standings Saturday, Oct. 31, at the NCHSAA 2A West Regional at the Kituwah Mound Trail in Bryson City, hosted by Swain County — good enough to qualify as a team for the 2A state meet.
The Jackets advanced on the strength of a remarkably tight pack. Hayesville scored 120 points, with all five scorers finishing within 27.7 seconds of each other — the smallest spread of any team in the race. Eli Cheeks led the way in 20th place in 18:12.19, followed by Porter Hood in 22nd (18:15.77), Parker Hughes in 24th (18:19.22), Jackson Dye in 25th (18:23.67) and Evan Burks in 29th (18:39.90). Garrison Boyer finished 49th in 20:00.95 and Gage Brown 54th in 20:36.89 to complete Hayesville's seven.

Corvian Community won the boys regional title with 46 points, followed by Community School of Davidson (81) and Mountain Island Charter (84). Cherokee's Ogana Swimmer won the individual race in 16:03.0.
On the girls side, Moss finished sixth overall in 21:01.10, earning All-Region honors and qualifying as an individual for the state meet. Hayesville's girls placed seventh as a team with 181 points.
Marlo Joyce was Hayesville's next girls finisher, 33rd in 23:13.66, followed by Annie Godfrey in 49th (25:10.61), Caroline Wade in 52nd (25:37.21), Libbie Moore in 60th (27:05.17), Lily Gordon in 64th (27:39.16) and Kaelyn Cook in 69th (29:04.39). Christ the King Catholic won the girls team title with 34 points, and its Shea Roche took the individual crown in 18:39.4.
