Murphy Man Faces Arson, Other Charges Following Arrest

CHEROKEE COUNTY, NC – Cherokee County Sheriff Dustin Smith announces the arrest of a Murphy man after a domestic dispute and attempted arson of an occupied dwelling.
On October 29, 2025, Deputies and Detectives with Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to 1224 Old Ranger Road in the Murphy community of Cherokee County in reference to reports of a domestic dispute. While responding, additional information was obtained that Asif Munshi was attempting to ignite the residence on fire with occupants inside.
Upon arrival Munshi was immediately detained while an investigation was conducted. Witness accounts and evidence present at the scene told investigators that Munshi had attempted to ignite the residence using a home-made incendiary device and had assaulted the occupants inside when they attempted to stop him.
Munshi was placed under arrest for the following offenses:
• Felony Attempted First Degree Arson
• Felony Possession/Production of a Weapon of Mass Destruction
• Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence
Munshi was presented before a North Carolina Magistrate who set conditions of release and ordered Munshi be held under no bond pending a 48-hour hearing. Munshi was later seen by a District Court Judge where he was given a $500,000.00 secured bond. Munshi is scheduled to appear in Cherokee County District Court on November 5, 2025.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
