Murphy Road Construction to Begin Overnight May 17 in Downtown Area

MURPHY, N.C. — Road construction crews will begin milling, paving, and related improvements along U.S. 19 Business in downtown Murphy starting Sunday, May 17, according to Mayor Tim Radford.

All work is scheduled to occur overnight between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. to minimize daytime traffic disruptions for residents and businesses.

“Milling operations will start on Hiwassee Street from McDonald’s through the downtown roundabout and continue north on Valley River Avenue,” the mayor’s office announced. Milling work on Valley River Avenue is expected to continue through Wednesday, May 21.

Additional milling is planned for Tennessee Street and Peachtree Street from Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28. That phase will begin near the Murphy School of Dance, proceed through the roundabout, and continue toward the Cherokee County Courthouse.

Paving operations on Hiwassee Street and Valley River Avenue are also set to begin on May 26, followed by pavement markings and utility adjustments once the paving is complete.

Areas where vehicles must be moved will be clearly marked in advance, and affected businesses will receive notice whenever possible. Motorists should prepare for overnight traffic impacts in the downtown area throughout the project.

The construction schedule remains tentative and is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve the downtown infrastructure along the U.S. 19 Business corridor. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible during overnight hours and to stay alert for construction signage and equipment in the area.
