No Candidates Qualify for Hiawassee City Council Seats; New Qualifying Period Set

HIAWASSEE, Ga. — The City of Hiawassee, Georgia, announced that no candidates qualified for two open city council seats ahead of the upcoming election. To address the vacancy, the city will hold a new qualifying period on Monday and Tuesday, August 25-26, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.


According to city officials, candidates must meet specific requirements outlined in Section 2.11 of the Hiawassee Municipal Code. These include being at least 21 years old, having lived in and been registered to vote in the city for the 12 months immediately preceding the election, and having no convictions for crimes involving moral turpitude.
