Union County Splits Friday Road Trip; Region Play Looms

The Union County High School basketball teams endured a mixed night of results on the road Friday, Dec. 5, as the Lady Panthers secured a league triumph, while the Panthers fell in a close contest against the host Sonoraville Phoenix. Both teams now hold matching 3-3 records as they prepare to dive deeper into AA Region 7 play.


The Union County Lady Panthers notched a decisive victory in the opening game of the night, scoring 53 points and limiting the host Sonoraville Phoenix to just 38. The win pushed the Lady Panthers' season record to 3-3. With the loss, Sonoraville falls to 5-1 on the campaign.


In the subsequent league contest, the Union County Panthers were edged out by a narrow margin, falling 59-54 to the host Sonoraville Phoenix. The loss dropped the Panthers' record to 3-3 on the season, while Sonoraville's victory moved their season mark to 3-3.


Both Union County squads will put their 3-3 records on the line next when they travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe for a AA Region 7 test on Tuesday, December 9. The Lady Panthers will face a Warriors team coming off a 59-45 non-league win over Darlington, bringing their record to 2-6. The Phoenix, with their 5-1 record, will travel to play the 6-1 Murray County Indians in another region bout. The Panthers face a tougher challenge against a Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe squad that boasts an undefeated 5-0 record after a tight 66-64 league win over Ringgold. Sonoraville (3-3) will also face a challenging region game against the 5-1 Murray County Indians.
