Cherokee County Opens Upset Bid Process for Topton Community Center Sale

MURPHY, N.C. — Cherokee County has received a $61,000 offer to buy the Topton Community Center property and is advertising an upset-bid sale, according to a public notice posted Tuesday on the county website.

The property is described as the Topton Community Center in Cherokee County, containing about 2 acres. The notice was published at 11:27 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2026.

Anyone who wants to upset the current offer must submit a sealed bid to the County Manager’s office at the County Courthouse, 75 Peachtree St. in Murphy, by 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2026. The county will open any bids at that time, and the highest qualifying bid will become the new offer. If more than one bid is submitted at the highest amount, the first such bid received will become the new offer.

A qualifying higher bid must raise the existing offer to at least $64,100 and must include a deposit equal to 5% of the bid, payable in cash, cashier’s check or certified check. The county will return deposits on bids that are not accepted and on an offer that is later upset by a qualifying higher bid. The final high bidder’s deposit will be returned at closing.

The Board of Commissioners must approve the final high offer before the sale closes and will do so within 30 days after the final upset-bid period has passed. Bidders must be current on all property taxes owed to the county.
