Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Enhances Victim Support Services

MURPHY, N.C. — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has provided vital support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault since 2004 through its Victim Advocates in Law Enforcement program. As one of ten rural law enforcement agencies nationwide selected for a National Sheriff’s Association grant, the office delivers comprehensive victim services within a law enforcement framework.

Victim advocates assist survivors in navigating the criminal justice system, acting as liaisons with law enforcement, the district attorney’s office, and Legal Aid of North Carolina. They help victims file Domestic Violence Protection Orders, secure free legal representation, and arrange transportation to court hearings for those without vehicles or unable to drive.

Domestic violence remains a leading cause of homicide in the United States, with risks escalating when victims attempt to leave their abusers. Advocates prioritize safety planning, helping victims secure safe accommodations like shelters or hotel rooms when no other options are available.

Court advocacy ensures victims feel secure during legal proceedings, with advocates accompanying them to deter unwanted contact from defendants and to serve as witnesses if violations occur. Beyond legal support, advocates connect victims with resources to meet basic needs, reducing the likelihood of returning to abusers due to financial hardship. Services include assistance with government aid applications, securing emergency funding for utilities, arranging medical and counseling appointments, facilitating shelter placements, and coordinating food deliveries from local food banks.

Since 2004, the Victim Advocate office has assisted 2,105 individuals, supporting an average of 188 victims annually from 2020 to 2024, including new clients and those with active protection orders.
