Press Release

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the public for their assistance in locating Joseph Whitener, who was wanted on outstanding warrants for Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.

On August 15, 2026, the Sheriff’s Office received a citizen tip that Whitener was in Clay County and would soon be returning to Cherokee County. Assistance from Clay County authorities provided additional information, including a description of the vehicle Whitener was believed to be traveling in.

Deputy Ryan Wilson located a vehicle matching the description near a location Whitener was known to frequent and initiated a traffic stop. Whitener then fled on foot from the passenger seat, running up a large hill. Deputy Wilson pursued Whitener and successfully apprehended him.

Whitener was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center, where he was served with his outstanding warrant and additionally charged with Resisting a Public Officer.

Sheriff Chris Wood stated: “I want to thank the public for the tips received that ultimately led to this arrest. The public plays an important role in helping us complete our mission of serving and protecting this community. I also commend Deputy Wilson on his outstanding performance and his willingness to sacrifice his personal safety to protect and serve this community.”

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the continued support and cooperation of the community. Citizen information and assistance remain an important part of our efforts to keep Cherokee County safe.
