Clay County Board of Education Recognizes Student Achievement, Honors Teacher of the Year

HAYESVILLE, N.C. — The Clay County Schools Board of Education highlighted student accomplishments and honored a standout educator during its meeting Monday, April 27.
Board members recognized Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from Hayesville High School for earning industry credentials, a key component of workforce readiness. The students’ achievements reflect expanded opportunities within the district’s CTE programs. Those recognized were Maddox Rich, Sky Harmon, Jocelyn Chastain, Raul Rivera-Prieto, and Will Jennings.

Automotive instructor Wade Byers was also recognized for earning multiple professional certifications that allow him to teach students pursuing credentials in several automotive fields. Those certifications include Automobile Technician, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Engine Performance, Engine Repair, Heating and Air Conditioning, Maintenance and Light Repair Technician, and Suspension and Steering.

In addition, the board recognized chorus students from Hayesville Middle School for their participation in the North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus. Students recognized included McKenna Moss, Skylan Stillwell and Ellie Wayman. They were joined by Choral Director Elizabeth Moss.

The meeting concluded with the announcement of the district’s 2026–27 CTE Teacher of the Year. Jamie Godfrey received the honor for his work as a construction and welding instructor at both Hayesville Middle and High schools, as well as his role as a dual enrollment instructor.
District officials praised Godfrey’s commitment to expanding opportunities for students and maintaining high standards in CTE programming across the school system.
