HAYESVILLE, N.C. — Clay County Fire and Rescue has bolstered its water emergency response capabilities with a new rescue boat, funded by a generous grant from the North Carolina Community Foundation. The state-of-the-art vessel, equipped with a 30-horsepower outboard motor, offers ample space for rescuers, lifesaving equipment, and victims, enhancing the department’s ability to respond swiftly to water-related emergencies.
The grant also provided a new boat trailer designed to streamline operations. The trailer features a top rack to store the department’s existing inflatable boat, used for river rescues or situations where a motorized vessel is impractical. Additional storage at the front of the trailer accommodates essential gear, allowing all equipment to be transported on a single unit for faster response times.
During winter months, when the department’s fire boat is moved from Gibson Cove’s boathouse to dry storage at Station 2, the new rescue boat offers a significant advantage. Unlike the fire boat, which requires a boat ramp, the lightweight rescue boat can be hand-carried by three people, enabling rapid deployment in critical situations.
Clay County Fire and Rescue expressed gratitude to the North Carolina Community Foundation for the grant, which has significantly improved the department’s readiness to serve the community during water emergencies.
