Clay County Fire & Rescue urges residents to check smoke alarms after time change

With the recent time change now behind us, Clay County Fire & Rescue is reminding residents to take a few minutes to check the smoke alarms in their homes.

In a recent social media post, the department encouraged people to use the time change as a reminder to replace batteries and test smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly.

Fire officials recommend replacing the batteries in every smoke alarm in the home and pressing the test button to confirm each unit is functioning. They also note that alarms should be tested monthly as part of regular home safety checks.

According to the department, homes should have smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the house. Smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older should also be replaced.

Working smoke alarms can significantly improve safety during a fire. Fire officials say functioning alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about half.

Clay County Fire & Rescue says checking alarms only takes a few minutes but can make a life-saving difference for families.

Residents are encouraged to test their alarms and replace batteries if needed to ensure their homes remain protected.
