Clay County GOP to Host Monthly Meeting with Supreme Court Candidate Sarah Stevens

HAYESVILLE, N.C. — The Clay County Republican Party will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Clay County Community Center, 25 Riverside Drive.

Light refreshments, snacks and desserts will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the business meeting scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, snack or dessert to share.

Sarah Stevens, the Republican candidate for the North Carolina Supreme Court in the November 2026 general election, will be the special guest speaker.

Stevens has said she believes the law should be applied as written and that judges should not create laws from the bench. She has stated that if elected, she will respect the state constitution and apply principles of conserving liberty in every case.

A Mount Airy resident, Stevens graduated from Mount Airy High School, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Campbell University School of Law. She served as president of the Surry County Bar Association and maintained a private law practice for more than 30 years. She and her husband, Edwin, have five children.

Stevens previously served as a Republican member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, where she chaired the House Elections Committee, served as speaker pro tempore and chaired the North Carolina Courts Commission. Additional information is available at sarahstevensnc.com.

In related political news, U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards has withdrawn from the 2026 Republican primary race for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District following a U.S. House Ethics Committee report. With insufficient time remaining before the general election for a new primary, state law requires the 11th District Republican Party Executive Committee to select a replacement nominee.

That meeting is scheduled for the evening of Aug. 10 at the Buncombe County GOP Headquarters in Asheville.
