Clay County Schools Welcomes James Phillips as New Director of Student Services and Athletics

Hayesville, NC – Clay County Schools is excited to announce the appointment of Mr. James Phillips as the district’s new Director of Student Services and Athletics, effective June 29, 2026.
Mr. Phillips brings a wealth of experience in education, student support, leadership, and athletics to the role. He currently serves as Senior Director of Tri-County Community College’s Graham County Campus, where he has continued his dedication to serving students and educators across diverse settings.
His extensive background includes serving as a middle school teacher, lead teacher of an Alternative Learning Center, testing coordinator, athletic director, and head coach. Mr. Phillips has also held building-level leadership positions at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, including roles as assistant principal and principal.
“Mr. Phillips has a proven track record of supporting student success both in and out of the classroom,” said district officials. “His combination of classroom experience, administrative leadership, and athletic expertise makes him an ideal fit for this important position in Clay County Schools.”
Mr. Phillips holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences Education and a Master’s degree in School Administration. He has completed the Distinguished Leadership in Practice Program through the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals’ Association (NCPAPA) and is currently pursuing an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.
Clay County Schools expressed enthusiasm about the addition to their leadership team.
