Growing pains on a Friday night: Young Yellow Jackets Learn a Hard Lesson Against Robbinsville

HAYESVILLE, N.C. — Friday night under the lights at Frank R. Long Memorial Stadium is supposed to feel like home. On September 18, 2026, the Hayesville Yellow Jackets hosted the Robbinsville Black Knights in Smoky Mountain 1A/2A play and ran into a reminder of just how unforgiving this conference can be.

Robbinsville left town with a 49-0 win. The Jackets left with another data point in a season that is still being written by a young roster.

The Black Knights set the tone early. With 8:18 left in the first quarter they found the end zone and added the PAT. They struck again at the 6:28 mark of the same period. By the 9:24 mark of the second quarter a rushing touchdown made it 21-0. An interception with 7:40 left in the half set Robbinsville up inside the Hayesville five-yard line. A quarterback scramble and pass six points later, plus the extra point, pushed the lead to 28-0 with 6:26 remaining before the break. Another score with 2:35 left in the half made it 35-0 at intermission.

The second half followed a similar script. A fumble recovery for a touchdown and PAT put Robbinsville up 42-0 with 9:08 left in the third. With under eight minutes to play they added one more, finishing the night at 49-0.

That’s a lot of points to absorb on your own field. It’s also the kind of night that happens when a young group is still figuring out how to play in one of the tougher conferences in the state. The Smoky Mountain 1A/2A does not hand out free weeks. Robbinsville came in hungry for its first conference win and played like it. Hayesville, now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league play, is still collecting those lessons.

The Jackets managed 66 passing yards and finished in the red on the ground. Those numbers tell part of the story. The rest is the usual mountain-football mix of inexperience, a physical opponent, and a night when the breaks went the other way. Interceptions and a fumble that turned into six points will get you in trouble against a team that finishes drives.

Hayesville will look to get back in the win column of Friday, Sept. 25 when the Rosman Tigers come to town. It will also be homecoming for the Yellow Jackets. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with homecoming happening at halftime.
