Hayesville Man Arrested on Methamphetamine Charges After Traffic Stop

ree

HAYESVILLE, NC — A routine traffic stop in Clay County led to the arrest of a Franklin man on felony drug charges early on August 21, 2025. At approximately 3:30 AM, Clay County Sheriff’s Officer Nate Rogers pulled over a gray Nissan near Ledford Lane off Old Hwy 64 west in Hayesville due to the vehicle lacking a visible license plate.

The driver, identified as Jeffery Wade McTaggart, 49, of Franklin, was unable to provide a driver’s license or proof of insurance for the vehicle. As the stop unfolded, Sheriff’s Sgt. Will Suggs arrived to assist. When McTaggart exited the Nissan, a small blue bag fell from his waistline, and he attempted to conceal it by pushing it away with his foot.

When questioned about the package, McTaggart initially denied ownership but later admitted it belonged to him and contained methamphetamine. Officers examined the bag, discovering two smaller bags inside, each containing a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

McTaggart was arrested and charged with felony Possession of Methamphetamine. He was issued a $20,000 secured bond for his release and is awaiting further court proceedings.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident. Authorities encourage anyone with information related to drug activity in the area to contact them.
