HAYESVILLE, N.C. — A local real estate firm is urging residents to dig into their closets — or shopping bags — to donate new socks for the homeless as October's cool breezes hint at winter's approach.
Sonja Silvers Realty Group launched its "SOCKTOBER" drive Monday, aiming to collect unworn socks throughout the month to distribute to area organizations aiding those in need. Socks, the campaign highlights, top the list of most-requested clothing items among homeless populations.
"With cold weather right around the corner, keeping feet warm can make all the difference," said Sonja Silvers, founder of the group. "We're calling on our community to help stock up on packages of new socks for men, women and children."
Donations can be dropped off at the firm's office at 57 Main St. in Hayesville. For more information, call (828) 389-9488.
The initiative underscores a simple yet vital need: According to national homelessness advocacy groups, socks often go undonated due to their unflashy appeal, leaving shelters perpetually short on the basic staple.
Silvers Realty Group, a fixture in the small mountain town of Hayesville, has hosted similar community drives in past years, focusing on seasonal essentials to support local nonprofits and shelters in Clay County and beyond.
