Looking for a fitness goal to kick off healthy habits in 2026? Why not run or walk a scenic, local road race for a good cause. A brand-new event is coming to Hiawassee, Georgia on March 14, 2026, featuring a half marathon (13.1 miles) and a 5K (3.1 miles). The Hiawassee Half Marathon & 5K benefits Hikeawassee, a free, volunteer-run program that shuttles Appalachian Trail thru-hikers into the city so they can access the resources they need to continue their 2,000-mile journey north to Maine.

Starting and finishing in the charming Hiawassee Town Square, this scenic road race showcases the natural beauty of the mountain-lake community. Both courses feature stunning views of Lake Chatuge, with the half marathon offering a full 360-degree tour around its sparkling shoreline. With primarily flat terrain, only a few moderate hills, and well-maintained road surfaces, runners of all experience levels can enjoy a smooth, fast course surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

The event welcomes participants of all ability levels. Walkers are encouraged to join the 5K, and the half marathon’s four-hour time limit makes it accessible for run-walk participants. Community members can also take part by volunteering for packet pickup, aid stations, course marshaling, and more.
