HAYESVILLE, N.C. — Highlands came to Hayesville High School on Wednesday night, took the lead, gave it back, and then took it again. When the whistle blew, the Highlanders had a 2-1 win and the Yellow Jackets had another one that got away.

The visitors scored with 29:55 left in the opening period and sat on a 1-0 lead for most of the half. Hayesville did not stay quiet. Josue Salas found the net with 2:58 left in the period and tied it at 1-1, a late equalizer that sent both sides to the break even and gave the home crowd something to cheer about.

That was as close as Hayesville would get. Highlands scored again at the 22:40 mark of the second period, and that goal held up. No more scoring followed. The Highlanders protected the one-goal margin the rest of the way and left town with the win.

The loss drops Hayesville to 7-4. The Yellow Jackets do not get a soft landing. They travel Monday, Oct. 12 to Summit Charter Academy in Cashiers for a challenge against the Bears. Summit is 9-2 and just beat Blue Ridge Early College 4-1 in league play. Monday's contest could be another nail-biter.
