Murphy Native Advances on American Idol with Unanimous Judge Vote

A 22-year-old from Murphy is heading to the next round of American Idol after a standout performance on the show’s second episode of the season.

Braden Rumfelt appeared on the popular singing competition accompanied by his twin brother, Kellen Rumfelt, who played guitar during the audition. The brothers’ performance of "Girl Crush" impressed all three judges — Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie — earning Braden a unanimous vote to advance.

Rumfelt’s audition marked his first appearance on the nationally televised stage, but his confident delivery and musical connection with his brother quickly set him apart. Judges praised his vocals and stage presence, with Underwood noting the authenticity of his performance and Bryan highlighting the chemistry between the twins.

Lionel Richie called the audition “memorable,” telling Rumfelt that his sound and storytelling fit well within the competition.

The unanimous decision sends Rumfelt forward as the season continues, putting Murphy and Western North Carolina in the national spotlight.
