Murphy Town Council Approves Resolution to Convey Fort Butler Park to Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians

Press Release

The Murphy Town Council approved a resolution authorizing the Town to convey Fort Butler Park and Historical Site to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians at no cost, pending completion of the legal transfer process.

Fort Butler was located near present-day Murphy and served as an Army headquarters during the forced removal of Cherokee people in 1838 during the Trail of Tears. The property now known as Fort Butler Park sits in the vicinity of that historic site.

Mayor Tim Radford said the decision reflects respect for the history connected to the land and a belief that the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is best positioned to preserve and interpret that history for future generations.

“This is an important step for our community,” Radford said. “Fort Butler is tied to a painful chapter in Cherokee history. While the park is located in Murphy, I believe the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians should have the opportunity to care for this site and share its history in their own voice.”

The conversation began as community leaders discussed the long-term stewardship of Fort Butler Park. Tia Lambert suggested that the Town consider conveying the site to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, leading to a broader discussion about the best future for a place so closely connected to Cherokee history.

“The more I thought and prayed about it, the more it made sense,” Radford said. “This is not Murphy stepping away from its history. It is about recognizing that history honestly, showing respect, and placing stewardship of this important place with the people most directly connected to its story.”

The Town and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will now work through the legal process necessary to complete the conveyance. Until that process is complete, Fort Butler Park will remain under Town ownership and maintenance.

Once the process is finalized, the Town and the Eastern Band anticipate holding a formal ceremony to recognize the conveyance and the significance of the site.

The Town looks forward to working with the Eastern Band on future communication and plans for Fort Butler Park.
