Murray County Defeats Towns County 14-3 in Season Opener

HIAWASSEE, Ga. — Murray County High School's football team opened the 2025 season with a 14-3 victory over Towns County High School on Friday, Aug. 15, at Towns County High School in Hiawassee.
Murray County struck first, scoring a touchdown in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The score held through the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Towns County responded with a field goal, narrowing the gap to 7-3. Late in the half, Murray County's punt pinned Towns County at their own 3-yard line, forcing a stalled drive and a punt. The halftime score remained 7-3 in favor of Murray County.
The third quarter saw Murray County capitalize on a strong kickoff return to the Towns County 35-yard line, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run. The successful point-after attempt extended their lead to 14-3, the only score of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Murray County attempted a 20-yard field goal, but the kick was unsuccessful. Neither team scored again, securing Murray County’s 14-3 win.
Penalties impacted both teams, with each having a potential touchdown nullified due to holding calls.
Towns County (0-1) will look to rebound when they host Lakeview Academy on Friday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
