MURPHY, N.C. — Cherokee County officials say a quick response from detention and medical staff likely saved an inmate’s life following a suspected fentanyl overdose at the Cherokee County Detention Center on the evening of Oct. 11.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a female inmate became unresponsive around 6:06 p.m., prompting Cherokee County EMS to respond. Before paramedics arrived, detention officers administered multiple doses of NARCAN and performed chest compressions. Their efforts revived the woman, who was transported to Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital and later released that night.
Officials said the inmate had turned herself in for a three-day “Quick Dip” probation period and managed to bring fentanyl into the facility despite standard booking scans. Authorities believe she flushed the remaining evidence before the incident occurred.
Following protocol, the detention center was placed on lockdown. Female inmates housed with the individual were separated and rescanned, and deputies, along with a K-9 team, conducted a full search of the female housing unit.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released.
Chief Deputy Justin J. Jacobs commended the detention staff for their rapid response, saying their quick action helped prevent a tragedy.
