Staff Report
Santa Claus is coming to town this weekend as the annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade returns to downtown Clay County on Saturday, Dec. 13.
The parade will step off at 6 p.m., with Santa serving as the grand finale. Before the parade, Santa will take part in his traditional meet-and-greet beginning at 4:45 p.m., giving families an opportunity for early holiday photos and visits.
Parade participants are asked to line up at the Clay County Courthouse parking area at the judicial center no later than 4 p.m. A variety of awards will be presented following the parade, including Most Christmas Spirit, Best Theme Float, Best Faith-Based Display and the Mayor’s Choice Award, with categories for both nonprofit and for-profit entries. Additional honors will be given for Best of Show in the horse and classic car divisions.
Several rules will be enforced to ensure safety and tradition. Santa costumes are not permitted on or in any parade entry, as Santa Claus is reserved exclusively for the parade’s closing. Underage drivers are not allowed.
Entry forms must be received at the newspaper office by noon on Friday, Dec. 12. Forms may be faxed to 389-9997, emailed to news@claycountyprogress.com, or dropped off at the Clay County Progress office at 450 Bus 64, Suite 1. Those needing a form or additional information may call 389-8431.
This year’s parade will be hosted by Becky Long, publisher of the Clay County Progross, alongside the Mountain Buzz's very own Travis Dockery. Organizers encourage the community to come out early, enjoy the festivities, and celebrate the start of the Christmas season.
