Sheriff Chris Wood Awards Medal of Valor to Five Local Heroes for Extraordinary Bravery

Cherokee County, NC — Today, Sheriff Chris Wood presented the prestigious Medal of Valor to five outstanding public safety professionals who demonstrated exceptional courage during a dangerous incident on September 10, 2022.


The honorees are:

• Captain Sean Myers, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office

• Lieutenant Drew Payne, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office

• Lieutenant Nathan Henderson, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office

• Detective Cody Williams, Murphy Police Department (formerly Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office)

• Magistrate Parker Morgan (formerly Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office)


The recipients were recognized for their swift thinking, coordinated response, and selfless bravery in a high-risk situation that directly protected the lives of Cherokee County citizens. Their actions exemplified the highest standards of public service and heroism.


“It is with great honor and pride that I recognize these five individuals for their extraordinary bravery,” said Sheriff Chris Wood. “On that night in 2022, they ran toward danger without hesitation to protect our community. Their courage and professionalism represent the very best of law enforcement, and I am grateful to finally present them with the Medal of Valor they so richly deserve.”
