UNION COUNTY, GA — The Union County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a phone scam targeting the community, where callers pose as law enforcement officials claiming a loved one has been arrested and demand immediate payment for their release.
According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are using personal information obtained online to make their calls seem legitimate. They falsely claim that ankle monitors have been placed on the arrested individual and offer to secure their release for a fee. The sheriff’s office emphasized that ankle monitors, release conditions, and bond amounts are determined solely by a judge, not through phone solicitations.
Victims are often pressured to act quickly and instructed to make payments through untraceable methods, such as gift cards or questionable mobile apps. The sheriff’s office stressed that it will never call residents to demand money for an inmate’s release.
Residents are urged to verify any claims about a loved one’s arrest by contacting the Union County Jail directly. The sheriff’s office advises against sharing personal or financial information over the phone with unknown individuals.
For questions about this scam or to confirm information, contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office directly.
