Sheriff's Office Warns of Yet Another Scam

ree

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about spam calls targeting local medical providers in which scammers pose as law enforcement officers.

According to the sheriff’s office, callers have been falsely claiming to be Chief Deputy Justin Jacobs and telling victims they missed jury duty. The callers then attempt to extort money over the phone.

Deputies emphasized that the sheriff’s office will never solicit money from anyone by phone or in person.

Authorities advised anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately, noting that money sent to scammers is typically not recoverable.

Victims who believe they have already been defrauded are urged to contact Cherokee County Dispatch at (828) 835-3144 to speak with a deputy.
