UNION COUNTY, Ga. — The Union County Fire Department is encouraging residents to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to handle emergencies effectively, emphasizing the importance of preparation and training in a recent social media post.
The department highlighted that while public safety personnel are trained to manage chaotic emergency situations, most individuals lack similar training. "Emergencies happen every day," the department stated, defining an emergency as "a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action."
To respond effectively, the department advises recognizing when a situation qualifies as an emergency, noting that minor inconveniences, such as receiving the wrong fast-food order, do not meet this threshold. Upon identifying an emergency, individuals should remain calm to maintain clear thinking and help others stay composed. The next steps include gathering critical information and calling 911 to provide detailed information to dispatchers.
The department stressed that calling 911 initiates a response but may not immediately resolve the situation. Actions such as performing CPR for cardiac arrest, controlling major bleeding, or using a fire extinguisher can be critical before help arrives.
To build confidence and competence, the Union County Fire Department recommends taking classes in CPR, first aid, and other emergency response skills. "It is always better to be prepared," the department noted, urging residents to research and enroll in educational programs to gain life-saving knowledge.
The department’s message, part of their commitment to community safety under the motto "Our Family Protecting Your Family," underscores the value of proactive preparation to mitigate the impact of emergencies.
