Firefighters from Union County’s Stations 4 (Ivylog), 5 (Suches), and 13 (Hidden Harbor) took part in a specialized training on lithium-ion battery fires in Cleveland, Georgia, on Friday, November 7.
The class, hosted by White County Fire Services, Habersham EMC, and Command and Control, LLC, was led by Command and Control Founder Webster Marshall, IV. The training brought together around 100 firefighters from across North Georgia for a day of hands-on learning about one of the fastest-growing fire hazards in modern life.
The morning session focused on the chemistry behind lithium-ion batteries, the dangers they pose, and how commonly they are found in homes, workplaces, vehicles, and even personal electronics. As the use of electric vehicles and battery-powered tools continues to rise, understanding these potential hazards has become increasingly important for first responders.
During the afternoon session, participants witnessed live demonstrations showing just how flammable certain types of lithium-ion batteries can be. The training also covered techniques for containing and
extinguishing these fires safely, as well as proper disposal methods once the batteries are rendered inactive.
Firefighters who attended said the class was both informative and eye-opening, emphasizing that while lithium-ion batteries have become a part of daily life, they bring unique risks that require new approaches to firefighting and safety.
Union County Fire Department officials expressed appreciation for the opportunity to train alongside departments from across the region, noting that staying informed on emerging hazards is key to keeping local communities safe.
