Another surge of Arctic air could bring some of the coldest temperatures of the winter to North Georgia and Western North Carolina early next week, according to Mountain Buzz’s official meteorologist, Greg Majewski.
Majewski said the American GFS weather model continues to indicate the potential for sub-zero temperatures in parts of the region on Tuesday, Jan. 27, following a storm system expected to move through over the weekend.

“The American GFS continues to push out sub-zero temperatures for parts of our area on Tuesday,” Majewski said. “It is clearly locking in on who gets the heavy freezing rain, which tends to support cold readings like these.”
Forecast models remain somewhat split on just how cold it will get. Majewski noted that the European model is not as extreme, but a blend of the two suggests many locations across North Georgia and Western North Carolina could see temperatures drop into at least the single digits.
The bitter cold would arrive in the storm’s aftermath, increasing concerns about hazardous travel, frozen pipes, and dangerous wind chills. Areas that experience freezing rain could see especially low temperatures once skies clear and Arctic air settles in.
Forecasters will continue to monitor the situation through the weekend to see if the temperature outlook changes.
“For now, residents should prepare for brutal cold behind this weekend’s storm,” Majewski said.
The Mountain Buzz will continue to provide updates as new forecast data becomes available.
