Cherokee County Sheriff's Office

Press Release

Sheriff Chris Wood announces the arrest of 51-year-old Michael Christopher Graves of Murphy, North Carolina, following a months-long investigation conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

In February 2026, detectives executed a search warrant at Graves' residence, where numerous electronic devices were seized as part of the investigation.

During a forensic examination of one of the electronic devices recovered from Graves' possession, detectives discovered an image that investigators allege is in violation of North Carolina General Statute 14-190 regarding the sexual exploitation of a minor.

As a result of the investigation, Graves was charged with Third-Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, a Class H Felony. Graves was arrested on August 6, 2026 and was issued a $10,000 secured bond.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives continue to examine evidence that has been collected, and additional charges or indictments may be forthcoming.

Sheriff Chris Wood stated, "Protecting the children of Cherokee County remains one of our highest priorities. I commend our detectives for their thorough work and commitment to investigating crimes involving the exploitation of children. These investigations are complex and time-consuming, but we will continue to pursue every lead and hold offenders accountable."

All individuals charged with a criminal offense are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
