Clay County Commissioners have been recognized at the state level for their ongoing collaboration with the NC Cooperative Extension, earning the prestigious “Partnership Award.” The honor highlights the county’s strong commitment to supporting programs that improve the well-being of residents of all ages.
For years, Clay County Government and the Clay County Cooperative Extension have worked hand-in-hand toward shared goals, building a relationship rooted in cooperation, innovation, and service. The county provides key financial support that helps attract and retain highly qualified Extension staff, along with in-kind resources such as access to public facilities. These locations host a wide range of Extension programs focused on agriculture, horticulture, youth development, and nutrition—including 4-H, community gardening initiatives, and the Master Gardener’s Downtown Discovery Garden.
One of the most celebrated results of the partnership is the new permanent farmers market facility, designed with input from Extension representatives serving on the planning committee. The venue will include a commercial kitchen and is expected to boost food and nutrition education, agritourism, and small business development across the region.
The collaboration doesn’t stop there. Extension is also actively involved in planning a proposed multi-use agriculture and livestock arena, which would accommodate youth activities, agricultural and educational programs, and community events. Beyond programming, Extension assists Clay County with strategic planning efforts, emergency preparedness, and grant development aimed at broadening services for residents.
County leaders say the recognition underscores the community-centered approach that has guided both organizations.
The Partnership Award reflects not only past accomplishments, but an ongoing vision for growth—one focused on providing opportunities, education, and resources for Clay County families and businesses for years to come.
