A recent social media post stirred controversy over the upcoming Clay County Christmas Parade and related activities around the Beal Center and downtown square. A post on a Hayesville community Facebook page warned residents:

“You are welcome to donate to the CCCRA who is in charge of the old courthouse, gazebo, bike trails etc... but no teddy bears at the parade, no prayer on the square, no Christmas Caroling.”

The post quickly ignited a firestorm of comments, with many residents expressing frustration and concern over alleged restrictions on holiday traditions.

In response, the Clay County Communities Revitalization Association (CCCRA) issued a statement on their official Facebook page to clarify the situation:

“CCCRA has never restricted prayer, worship, or holiday music in our community spaces. We remain committed to supporting events and traditions that bring our community together in positive and meaningful ways. Anyone who wishes to book an event with us, whether indoor or on the courthouse lawn, should contact bealcenterevents@icloud.com to complete the required paperwork.

Bookings are required to ensure there is no overlap of indoor/outdoor events, liability issues, and/or privacy of our guests. We respectfully ask our community to seek information directly from our official channels rather than from sources that may be misinformed. Spreading inaccurate claims can unintentionally harm the programs, youth, and community who benefit from the hard work of our board members and volunteers.

If you have concerns or would like clarification about anything you’ve read, want to learn more about our organization, or would like to get more involved and volunteer, please reach out to us directly at claycountycommrevitalization@gmail.com.

We value our supporters and believe open communication and knowledge is the best path forward.”

Part of the confusion stemmed from the practice of tossing stuffed animals from parade floats. The Clay County Progress, a parade sponsor since 1987, explained that the practice was banned after some toys were left unclaimed on the square, becoming wet and dirty.

Becky Long, publisher of the Progress, also addressed rumors that Christmas carols or religious floats were prohibited. “Anyone who has ever been to the parade knows we welcome and encourage religious floats and participation. In fact, we have an award for 'Best Faith-Based' float." Long offered to clear things up for anyone who might still be confused, saying, "I encourage anyone with questions not to speculate, wonder or pass along untruths, just call me at 389-8431. Let's continue our long tradition of having a beautiful parade and heralding in Christmas as only Clay County can — together."

The CCCRA and Clay County Progress continue to welcome community involvement and hope the parade season remains a joyful celebration for all.

The parade is scheduled for Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. on the historic Hayesville square.
