Chabad of Rural Georgia will light a 12-foot public Hanukkah menorah at the Hiawassee Town Square, on Tuesday, December 16th, the 3rd night of the eight-day Festival of Lights, at 5:30pm. The community will be joined by elected officials and dignitaries. The event will feature hot latkes, donuts, festive vibes and more! Complimentary Hanukkah menorahs and candles will be distributed as well for participants to light at home.
Rabbi Chaim Markovits, who directs the Chabad of Rural Georgia with his wife Chayala Markovits said, “The story of Hanukkah demonstrates the tremendous power of light to overcome darkness. We can have no better response to the negativity we encounter than to gather in even greater numbers and celebrate the menorah's light in public.”
“Our public menorah lighting carries added significance this year, as Jewish communities worldwide come together in unity and support for Israel and the release of the captives. We are offering special prayers and traditional songs in honor of Israel and in the hopes of the speedy release of all the hostages. We are expecting record crowds at the menorah-lighting this year,” says Markovits.
Hanukkah emphasizes that each and every individual has the unique power to illuminate the entire world.
Chabad-Lubavitch's annual Hanukkah campaign has distributed millions of menorahs to Jews around the world and erected thousands of public menorahs to share its universal message of light over darkness with humanity at large.
