Hanging Dog Fire Department Issues Urgent Call for New Volunteers

Cherokee County, NC – The Hanging Dog Fire Department is reaching out to residents with an urgent plea for help as the all-volunteer organization faces a critical shortage of members that could impact its ability to serve the community and maintain favorable insurance rates.

In a message to citizens of the Hanging Dog Fire District, department leaders emphasized that while they have solid equipment and resources in place, “equipment alone cannot serve our community.” They need dedicated individuals willing to step up and help protect their neighbors.

The department currently holds a valuable Class 6 ISO rating, which helps keep homeowners’ insurance premiums lower for residents throughout the district. However, officials warn that without increased participation, they are in danger of losing that rating next year.

“A very small group of volunteers is doing everything they can to respond to calls and protect this district,” the department stated. “They are committed, but the strain is growing. We are doing our best to hold the line—but it is getting tougher every day without additional help.”

Department leaders stressed that this is a community fire department made up of neighbors helping neighbors. They are seeking people for frontline firefighting and EMS roles, as well as support positions. No prior experience is necessary for those willing to learn.

Meeting Information:

  • Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 PM.

Anyone interested in learning more or joining is encouraged to contact:

  • Kevin Carter: 828-361-4624

  • Aaron Gentry: 828-361-8688

The department closed its message with gratitude: “This is your fire department… If you have ever considered serving your community, now is the time.”

Residents of the Hanging Dog Fire District who want to make a direct impact on local safety and help preserve lower insurance rates are urged to reach out. Even a small increase in volunteers can make a significant difference in sustaining this vital community service.
