HAYESVILLE, N.C. — Former Hayesville High School girls’ basketball coach Darryl McClure was inducted Sunday, Oct. 12, into the Western North Carolina Hall of Fame, honoring a career that built one of the region’s most remarkable dynasties.
McClure led the Yellow Jackets to six consecutive 1-A state championships from 1988 to 1993, a run that cemented his teams among the most dominant in North Carolina high school basketball history.
During his 22-year tenure at Hayesville, McClure compiled a 426-172 overall record and guided the program to seven conference titles.
He was twice named Associated Press Coach of the Year and earned the Asheville Citizen-Times Coach of the Year award on two occasions.
McClure’s legacy continues to be felt in the Hayesville community, where his commitment to excellence and leadership inspired generations of athletes and coaches alike. Just last season, Hayesville High School named the gym the Darryl K. McClure Gymnasium to honor the legendary coach.
