Historic Berrong-Oakley House Advances in Restoration with Porch Repairs and New Accessibility Ramp

Towns County, Ga. — Volunteers have made notable strides in recent weeks restoring the Berrong-Oakley House, a 121-year-old landmark that continues to showcase exceptional early 20th-century craftsmanship while adapting for future generations.

A dedicated team focused on repairing a section of the porch ceiling damaged by a leak from the previous roof. During the work, crews discovered remarkably little rot in the structure—an encouraging sign of the home’s original quality and durability. To strengthen the area without compromising its historic integrity, new rafters were carefully set into place, providing modern support while preserving the character of the 1905 building.

In tandem with the structural repairs, the installation of an ADA-accessible ramp is nearing completion. Built originally as a private residence, the Berrong-Oakley House was not designed with modern accessibility in mind. Organizers say expanding access has become a key priority in the ongoing restoration, ensuring that all community members can visit and enjoy this piece of local history.

As part of the new accessible pathway leading to the house, supporters now have the opportunity to leave a permanent legacy through the engraved brick and paver program. Each personalized brick will become an integral part of the walkway, serving as both a tribute to families, memories, and generous donors and a lasting contribution to the preservation effort.

The Berrong-Oakley House restoration project highlights a thoughtful balance between honoring the past and embracing the future. With these latest improvements, the historic home is steadily moving closer to welcoming visitors from all walks of life for years to come. Community members interested in participating in the brick program or learning more about volunteer opportunities are encouraged to reach out to project organizers.
