How Hydroelectric Power Is Generated at Chatuge Dam

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills of Clay County near Hayesville, Chatuge Dam harnesses the Hiwassee River to produce clean, renewable electricity. Operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the dam creates the scenic 7,000-acre Chatuge Lake, which straddles the North Carolina-Georgia border. Built primarily for flood control in 1942, a single hydroelectric unit was added in 1954. The facility has a nameplate capacity of about 13.2 megawatts (MW) and a summer net dependable capacity of roughly 14 MW.
From Flood Control to Power Production
Chatuge Dam is an earth-and-rock fill structure, approximately 150 feet high and over 3,000 feet long. Originally constructed during World War II to store water and regulate flows for downstream power generation, it was later upgraded for on-site electricity production. The dam was raised in stages to increase storage capacity. Today it serves multiple purposes: flood reduction, water flow support for downstream facilities, recreation, and power generation.
How the Power Is Generated
The process follows standard hydropower principles, converting the potential energy of elevated water into electricity:
Water Intake: Water from the reservoir is drawn in and the flow is controlled by gates.
Delivery Pipe: Pressurized water travels through a large steel pipe to the powerhouse downstream.
Turbine: The falling water strikes a reaction turbine with a net head of around 100 feet, causing it to spin and convert kinetic energy into mechanical energy.
Generator: The spinning turbine drives a connected generator, producing alternating current electricity through electromagnetic induction.
Transmission: Electricity is increased in voltage and sent into the TVA grid. The water is then released back into the Hiwassee River downstream.
Output varies with water levels and demand, but the plant provides valuable peaking power and grid support while generating several gigawatt-hours per quarter in recent periods.
Chatuge Dam remains a modest but important part of TVA’s hydroelectric system. Beyond power, the reservoir offers boating, fishing, and trails, boosting tourism in the Hayesville and Hiawassee area. The facility, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcases mid-20th-century engineering that continues to deliver sustainable energy.
