Jackets Fall to 0-2 with Loss to Enka

Hayesville spent Friday night trying to climb out of a hole that opened in the first quarter and only got deeper. Enka scored in every period, turned Yellow Jackets mistakes into short fields, and rolled to a 49-6 non-conference victory.

The Jets owned the opening 12 minutes and led 15-0 after one quarter. A Hayesville fumble with 32 seconds left in the period gave Enka the ball again, and the Jets opened the second quarter with a touchdown run to make it 21-0. The extra-point try failed.

Another fumble with 10:40 remaining in the first half put Enka in scoring position once more. The Jets punched it in from 10 yards with 9:54 left, and the extra point made it 28-0.

Hayesville caught a brief break when Enka intercepted a pass at the 8:50 mark but fumbled the ball through the end zone, giving the Yellow Jackets a new set of downs. The drive stalled.

Enka added a 17-yard touchdown run with 3:31 left before halftime and converted the extra point to take a 35-0 lead into the break.

The second half looked much the same. Enka scored with 10:54 remaining in the third quarter and added the extra point for a 42-0 lead. Hayesville’s defense finally forced a stop, but another fumble with seven minutes left in the game handed the Jets the ball again. Enka scored on the first play from scrimmage and converted the extra point to make it 49-0.

With 1.8 seconds remaining, Caleb Allen hauled in a pass and ran into the end zone to spoil the shutout. The extra-point attempt failed, making the final score 49-6 in the Jets' favor.

The Yellow Jackets, still looking for their first win after a lopsided loss to Towns County last week, host Copper Basin, Tenn., in their home opener Friday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
