Area high school basketball teams were busy Thursday night, Feb. 26, as the North Carolina state playoffs continued in the 1A and 2A tournaments, producing a mix of hard-fought losses and decisive wins.
In the Class 2A girls bracket, the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets saw their postseason run come to an end with a 47–40 loss to Community School of Davidson. Despite a competitive effort, Hayesville was unable to close the gap late against the visiting Spartans.
Also in 2A girls action, the Murphy Lady Bulldogs advanced with a convincing 45–21 victory over Highlands Tech, holding their opponent to just 21 points for the game.
The night was also a good one for the Murphy Bulldogs, who picked up a 71–50 win over Albemarle in the Class 2A boys tournament. Murphy controlled the game offensively and pulled away in the second half to secure the win.
In Class 1A action, the Andrews Wildcats edged The College Prep & Leadership Academy in a thriller, winning 76–73 to move on in the postseason.
The Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles delivered one of the most lopsided results of the night, rolling past North Stokes 84–52 in 1A girls play.
However, the Hiwassee Dam Eagles boys team saw its season end with an 83–70 loss to Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy in the 1A boys bracket.
With Thursday’s results in the books, several area teams continue their push toward a state championship, while others close out their seasons after competitive playoff appearances.
