Murphy Proclaims September 25 as Dolly Parton Day

The Town of Murphy will recognize Friday, September 25, as Dolly Parton Day, with Mayor Tim Radford issuing a proclamation encouraging the community to honor the Appalachian icon by doing something good for someone else.

The date September 25, or 9/25, was chosen as a fitting tribute to Parton’s famous song and movie 9 to 5. More importantly, the day will celebrate the kindness, generosity, grace, and respect for others that Parton demonstrated throughout her life.

The observance is being announced several weeks in advance so residents, businesses, schools, churches, nonprofits, and civic organizations have time to brainstorm, get creative, and make plans to participate.

On September 25, everyone in Murphy is challenged to perform at least one “Dolly Good Deed.”

That could mean helping a neighbor, giving a child a book, volunteering, supporting a local charity, encouraging someone who needs it, mending a relationship, buying someone lunch, or simply making an extra effort to treat others with kindness, dignity, and respect.

Businesses and community organizations are also encouraged to develop their own creative ways to participate and give back.

“It doesn’t have to be big, and it doesn’t have to cost anything. Just do something good for somebody else.”

Throughout her life, Parton used her success to lift others up through childhood literacy, education, medical research, disaster relief, and support for communities throughout Appalachia and beyond.

On 9/25, let’s honor Dolly by treating people the way she treated people — with kindness, generosity, grace, respect, and an open heart. If everyone does one good thing, imagine the difference one day can make.
