Racing fans kickoff Holiday Weekend with Tri-County Racetrack’s 'Independence Day in the Dirt' event

BRASSTOWN, N.C. — David McCoy of Franklin, N.C., charged from the second starting spot to victory in the Limited Late Models feature Thursday night at Tri-County Racetrack.


McCoy held off Jason Deal of Copperhill, Tenn., in a competitive 30-lap A-main on a holiday eve card that drew solid local entries across several divisions. Shawn Chastain of Murphy, N.C., who earned the pole via qualifying, finished third. Fifth place finisher Junior Whitener received a bonus for being the highest finishing 604 Late Model in the main event.


In the 602 Crate Late Models, Michael Barnett of Hayesville, N.C., took the win in the 20-lap feature, also advancing from fourth on the grid. David McCoy again placed second, with Dillion Barrett of Hiawassee, Ga., third. A scary moment early in the race saw the No. 117 of Dylan Beaver come to a spectacular stop after making contact with the track-entry wall. To the delight of everyone in attendance, Beaver quickly exited his car under his own power.


Jason Berrong of Murphy, N.C., wired the field from the pole in the Hobby Sportsman 20-lap feature for his second win in a row. Tristan Conley of Murphy finished second and Mark Conley of Blue Ridge, Ga., placed third.


Other feature winners included:

  • Street Stocks (15 laps): Roger Beaver of Murphy, N.C.

  • Open Wheel Mods (15 laps): Kenny Taylor of Dallas, GA.

  • Stock Front Wheel Drive (15 laps): Jonathan Hamby of Peachtree, N.C.

  • Crown Vic (15 laps): Dewayne Worley of Canton, N.C.


The program was part of the track’s Independence Day in the Dirt promotion at the Brasstown facility which included a fireworks show for racegoers. Next up for the Brasstown Bullring is an event scheduled for Friday, July 17.
