HAYESVILLE, N.C. — Two Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies were honored with letters of commendation for their heroic actions in de-escalating a life-threatening situation involving a person in crisis, authorities announced.

Sgt. Aly Daniel and Deputy Cory Scroggs responded to a call involving an individual attempting suicide with a rifle, the sheriff’s office said. Using their expertise in de-escalation, the deputies successfully persuaded the person to surrender the weapon, enabling them to connect the individual with professional mental health services.

The sheriff’s office credited the deputies’ actions with likely saving the person’s life. “We are very proud to have Sgt. Daniel and Deputy Scroggs on the team,” the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
