Press Release

HIAWASSEE, Ga. — The Towns County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents that a new prescription medication drop box is now available to the public, providing a safe, convenient, and free way to dispose of unwanted or expired medications.

The standalone collection container is located outside the Towns County Sheriff's Office and is accessible to citizens who wish to properly dispose of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. The service is provided at no cost as part of the Sheriff's Office's ongoing commitment to public safety and community health.

Residents using the drop box are asked to remove medications from their original containers before depositing them. Tablets, capsules, pills, and liquid medications should be poured directly into the receptacle. Empty prescription bottles and other containers should be disposed of separately and should not be placed in the drop box or left on the Sheriff's Office grounds.

Sheriff Anthony Coleman said the program is designed to help prevent prescription drug misuse while also protecting the environment by keeping medications out of landfills and waterways.

“Proper disposal of unused medications is one of the simplest ways citizens can help prevent accidental poisonings, prescription drug abuse, and environmental contamination,” Coleman said. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of this free service and help keep our community safe.”

The Towns County Sheriff's Office reminds residents that the drop box is intended for medications only. Citizens with questions about acceptable items or the disposal process are encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Office directly.
